Matt Cook was more than an exceptional athlete—he was the kind of person who inspired everyone who met him. A standout Junior A hockey player with the Bonnyville Pontiacs, Matt’s world changed at just 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Even after undergoing chemotherapy and losing his left leg below the knee, Matt never let adversity define him. Instead, he chose a path of courage, determination, and heart. Introduced to sledge hockey in 2007, Matt poured his energy into mastering the sport, quickly rising to the national level. By 2008, he was representing Canada on the world stage, helping bring home gold at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge and bronze at the IPC World Championships. His competitive spirit was fierce, but it was his unwavering optimism and humility that truly set him apart. Matt faced every challenge with strength and grace. When his cancer returned in 2009, he didn’t back down—he fought harder. He continued to train, to dream, and to live with the same determination that had carried him onto Team Canada. He passed away on April 4, 2010, just weeks after the Vancouver Paralympic Games, at only 22 years old. Yet in those short years, Matt left a legacy that continues to inspire. His memory lives on through the Matt Cook Foundation, which supports young adults undergoing cancer treatment, and through the Matt Cook Western Canada Sledge Hockey Tournament, an annual sledge hockey tournament held in his honor. Matt was a leader, a teammate, a friend—and above all, a symbol of resilience. He reminded us that our greatest strength lies not in what we can do, but in how we rise after we fall.
